Boyd of New Kent County

Robert Boyd was born in Kilmarnock, Scotland in 1750. He came to Virginia when a young man and settled in Richmond. He was married in 1774 to Martha Fleming (born 1756), a daughter of William Fleming Cocke and his wife, Theodocia Cowley. The name of John Boyd was listed on the 1782 Virginia Census as being a resident of Richmond, Virginia. In 1806 he purchased Mt. Airy Plantation from the Posey estate in New Kent County and built a home on the old Meaux site. The house stood near the edge of the bluff overlooking Black Creek and the Pamunkey River. In 1810 the tax digest showed that he owned 31 slaves. He died before 1820 and his wife, Martha Boyd, claimed 505 acres of land. She apparently remarried because in 1844 Martha Cocke Boyd Ingram, a widow, resided with her brother, William and also with John Parker Boyd.

John Parker Boyd, born 1797, owned the farm in 1850. His wife was Sally B., born 1810 and their children were: George G. Boyd, born 1828; William R. Boyd, born 1835; Martha F. Boyd, born 1843, Alwida A. Boyd, born 1846 and Earl Boynd, born 1810 in New Kent County.
