Berry of Ireland, Virginia and Tennessee
James and John Berry emigrated from Ireland to Virginia with their families in 1746 and 1747. James Berry was born in Ireland about 1700 where he was married to Elizabeth Enfield. He died in 1749.
Thomas Berry, the son of James and Elizabeth, was born in Ireland and came to Washington County, Virginia with his parents. Wife, Ester. He served in the French and Indian war. Thomas and Ester had two sons, viz: John and Thomas.
Thomas Berry, son of Thomas and Ester, was married to Elizabeth Walker on 15 Feb 1788. He served in the Revolutionary War as an Ensign and was wounded by the Cherokee Indians. In 1809 he removed his family to Rutherford County, Tennessee. The couple had six children.
James Enfield Berry, son of Thomas and Elizabeth, was born 5 April 1790 in Washington County, Virginia. He was married four times. Second, to Rebecca McChesney on 13 Aug 1817 and by her had six children, one of which was the father of Martha Berry, founder of the Berry Schools in Rome, Georgia. Rebecca was a daughter of James McChesney and Sara Crawford. He was the first mayor of Chattanooga. He was the father of twenty children and died at the age of 95 years.
William Hamilton Berry, son of James Enfield Berry and Rebecca was married to Josephine Daniel, one-half Cherokee Indian. They settled in Chattanooga. He operated a grist mill in Berryton and one at Coosa. Nine children.
