Berkeley Family

Carter Berkeley, the fifth child of Nelson and Elizabeth (Wormeley Carter) Berkeley, was born on 20 June 1768 at Airwell in Hanover County, Virginia. He was a direct descendant of Colonel Edmund Berkeley at Barn Elms, in Middlesex County. Landon Carter of Sabine Hall in Richmond County was his maternal grandfather. Landon Carter was one of the 18th century planters who had made a genuinely scientific effort to combat the fly-weevil, a wheat pest which invaded Virginia about 1730. In 1768, he contributed to the first volume of Transactions of the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia. He had a brother, Robert E. Berkeley.
