Adams of Maryland and Halifax County


John Adams came from Wales during the 18th century and settled first in Maryland before removing to Virginia. He had three sons, viz: Sylvester, Philip and John.

John Adams, son of John (above), settled in Halifax County, Virginia about 1752 and was married to Susan Wood, daughter of Richard Wood of Brunswick County.

William Adams, eldest son of John and Susan Adams, was born ca 1756 in Halifax County and died at Black Walnut 10 September 1839. He served as a soldier during the Revolutionary War. Three Adams brothers married daughters of George Boyd. William married Elizabeth Boyd; Sylvester married Rebecca and Richard married Hannah Boyd.

John Richard Adams, the son of Richard, son of William, son of John, son of John the emigrant), was born in Chesterfield County Virginia, but removed to Halifax county in 1849 and married Amanda Wade, a daughter of Richard and Sarah (Chappell) Wade. Amanda Wade Adams died in 1853, and her husband (John Richard Adams) married Mary A. Stanford, a daughter of Saurin Stanford of Orange County, North Carolina.
