SCHLEY, William, Governor of Georgia from 1835-1837, was born 12/10/1786 in Frederick, Maryland.
During this administration, the Creek war broke out, and in 1836 he recommended the construction of the
Western & Atlantic Railroad. He died 11/20/1850 in Augusta, Ga. Ref: Memoirs of

SHIPMAN Samuel, born 1820-24 Henderson County, North Carolina married Martha Sparks 1883 in
Alabama. Lived in Lyerly, Chattooga County, Georgia in 1886 through 1906. Contact: Martha

SMITH, Hardy b. 1757 d. 2/1852, Rev. War Soldier, enlisted at
Cumberland Co., N. C. He m. Rebecca Thompson 11/16/1796 in
Washington Co., Ga. She d. Laurens Co., Ga. in 1835. Among other
children were: Stephen, Lofton, Thompson, Hardy 10/17/1801-
3/27/1864 m. (1) Henora Beacham (2) 5/22/1836 Ann Anderson.

STANTON Frank L., first Poet Laureate of Georgia, was born in Charleston, South
Carolina on February 22, 1857, the son of Valentine and Katherine Rebecca Stanton.
"During my early boyhood," said he, "it was my mother's custom to read to me from the
Methodist hymn book. I was brought up on Charles Wesley and Isaac Watts." He worked
as a copy boy for the
Savannah Morning News. His verse attracted the attention of
Joel Chandler Harris, who was then an editorial writer on the News. In 1887, Stanton began publishing his own paper,
The
Smithfield News, at Smithfield. That year he married Miss Leona Josey. Later, he
served on the staff of the
Rome Tribune, and the
Constitution in Atlanta.
He was proclaimed "Poet Laureate of Georgia" on February 22, 1925 by Governor Clifford
Walker. Among his poems -- Song of the Soil, Comes One with a Song, Songs from
Dixie, Up from Georgia, Little Folks Down South. He died in 1927. Ref: Kilowatt News,
