Cobb County Records
In 1867, W. D. McKinney witnessed a deed of Anderson Stoddard of Newton County to Archibald Griggs of Cobb County. (Cobb Deed Book A, page 388). Also, The Cobb Minute Book A lists May or Mary McKinney, as widow of Thomas McKinney, deceased. W. W. Carroll, admr. She applied for a year's support for herself and her minor children. This record was undated, but was written after an 1871 record. It seems to fit. The earliest McKinney family to Cobb Co. was a Patience McKinney found there in 1860, age 52, with a son, J. K., age 20. (J. K. McKinney was listed 1870 Cobb Co. as John McKinney, age 30, born R. I. It looks like the next course of action is to locate the McKinney family on the 1850 and 1860 S. C. Census. There was a William McKinney in Greene, Pickens, Spartanburg, Granville and Edgefield Co. That should establish for certain the name of Mary's husband. Researched for Catie Benz
