GAINES, James was born in Laurens district, South Carolina in 1791, a son of Richard Gaines. "He was a soldier in the War of 1812 and fought the Indians in South Ga., and Fla. He married Margaret Clore about 1812 and selling his farm in Laurens at a loss in the 30's, he and his family and slaves removed to Georgia, working on rented lands near Adairsville on the old Hamilton-Fitten place. He was one of the charter members of the Oothcalooga Baptist Church. Later he bought land near Cassville....died Oct. 1856 in Adairsville."' History of Bartow County (Cass) by Josephine Cunyus.

GARNETT, Thomas, (the son of Anthony Garnett and his wife, of Virginia who was a Revolutionary War Soldier of Virginia, Continental Line, died in Columbia County in 1794). Thomas was born 1750 in Essex County, Va., died 1793 in Chatham Co., Ga. He married Rachel Willson on 1/8/1772 in the Ebenezer Jerusalem Church in Effingham County, on 1/8/1772. Rachel married (2) William G. Porter, Rev. War Soldier. One child: John Garnett, born 1776, married 1794, Mary Bostwick, daughter of Samuel Bostwick and his wife, Ann Mary Maner. GAY, Allen, son of Thomas Gay (Rev. Soldier of N. C.), was born 1765 in Northampton Co., N. C., died Coweta Co., Ga. 6/18/1847, buried at the Macedonia Baptist Church. He served as a pvt. in Capt. Robert Caiford's Co., Col. Dickerson's N. C. Regt. He married (1) 9/5/1787, Celia Rae Elbert of Savannah, Georgia, daughter of Major General Samuel Elbert (Rev War Soldier) and his wife, Elizabeth Rae, died 1793 and (2) in Georgia, Abigail Castleberry, and (3) in 1824, Annie Benton, widow, of Coweta County. Issue by 1st wife: John William Gay married Margaret Cady. Issue by 2nd wife: Elizabeth, born 1790, married Henry Eady and Gilbert Gay, born 1811, married Sarah Stamps. GAY, Henry, son of Henry, was b. ca 1753 in Rockbridge Co., Va., d. after 1815 in Emanuel Co., Ga. He first lived in Burke Co. GA where he drew in 1805 Ga. Land Lottery. Emanuel Co. deed #2 2/9/1810, John Raiford of Jefferson Co. to Henry Gay of Burke Co. 65-1/2 acres. 7/1/1815 deed of :Ienry Gay of Emanuel Co. to William Price of Burke Co. 85-1/2 acres on David's Branch in Burke Co. bought from John Raiford 11/14/1798. Henry m. Jane Henderson, dau. of Jones Henderson, with William Galloway sur. on their marriage bond dtd 1/15/1785. Henry is named in LWT of his Grandfather, Henry Gay, dtd 1/7/1779, probated 4/6/1779, Will Bk I, p. 46, Rockbridge Co., Va., "To my grandson, lIenry, 250 acres of land by way of intail joining lines west Robert Lockridge and 14 pds. and this is his money that is in his hands." He is also listed as a grandson in LWT of his grandmother, Marthew Gay, dtd 1785 Rockbridge Co., Ga. Son: Josiah.
GAY, Henry was b. ca 1710, LWT dtd 1/7/1779, probated 4/16/1779, Rockbridge Will Bk 1, p. 46, names his grandson, Henry. Wife, Marthew, "the land on which I now live from the line of my grandson's place and at the decease of my wife the land is to fall to my daughter, Sary. Son-in-law: John Frazer. GIBSON, John, son of Gideon, b. S. C. 1759, died 1832 in Fulton Co. Served as a pvt in the S. C. Regt under Col. Charles Pickney. He married (1) 1779, Fannie Flewellyn, d. 1807, dau. of Abner Flewellyn (2), 1809, Elizabeth Dozier (3) Clara Butts, widow of Wm. Butts. She died 1842. GIBSON, John, born 1750, moved to Cheraw Dist., S. C., then Warren Co., Ga. Served in the S. C. Line, Rev. War. He married (1) 1777, Ann Crawford (2) Widow Fuller. Issue by 1st wife: Thomas, born 1786 m. Martha Neal; John, born 1778; Susan G. born 1780; and William, born 1783. Issue by 2nd wife: Mary Anne; Ferriby; Lucy; Elizabeth and David Neal. GILLIAM, Peter, b. 1737 Va., died Wilkes (now Elbert) Co., Ga. 1809. Rev. War Soldier from Pittsylvania Co., Va. under Gen. Daniel Morgan; received land grant in Wilkes Co., Ga. He married 1758, Ann Heard, dau. of Stephen Heard. Issue: Charles, Sarah (married Ewing Morrow, son of Robert Morrow); Mary married Mr. Reeves of Va.; Patsey married Mr. Williams of Greene Co., Ga.; Elizabeth; and Ann, married Joseph Morrow, brother of Ewing Morrow. GOBER, George Wilson and his son, Thomas A., came to Cobb Co. in latter pt of 1832 from Franklin Co. Family came from Va. into N. C., then Ga. George Wilson Gober m. into another branch of the fami1y, his wife being Polly, dau. of William Gober, formerly of Va. He lived in Cobb Co. until 1851 when he and wife removed to Texas where he died age of 88. lie is buried in Barnham, Texas. Above Thomas A. Gober is buried in Citizens Cemetery, Marietta, Ga.

GOLDING, John R. died of apoplexy while on a visit to South Carolina. Of Athens, formerly Professor of languages, Franklin College (now Univ. of Ga.). He died at summer residence of his father-in-law, Hon. Judge Nott of Union Dist., S. G. He represented Clarke Co. in State Legislature at time of his death.

GORDON, Alexander, son of Thomas, m. Susanna Terrel 8/30/1780 Wilkes Co., N. C. He purchased land in Wilkes Co., Ga. from Nathaniel Bulloch and his wife, Mary, 400 acres on Kettle Creek and waters of Little River, adj. Joel Phillip's land, 8/21/1787. He is listed 1800 Oglethorpe Co., Ga. Census with 2 male children under 10, 2 females under 10, 2 females 10-16, female 16-26, and 17 slaves. Will Bk B, p. 129, Oglethorpe Co., Ga., LWT of Alexander Gordon dtd 4/23/1813, probated 7/2/1816 names wife, Susannah and son-in-law, Samuel Gardner, and dau., Frances Roy Bullock, wife of Hawkins Bullock. In 1796 Wilkes Co., he served an action for debt against Est. of Boswell Bridgeman. Alexander Gordon and his wife, Susannah, deeded 350 acres of land on Kettle Creek to Joel Terrell 4/11/1783. William Pollard and wife, Alecy deed to Alexander Gordon 350 acres on Kettle Creek 10/22/1787.
GORDON, Alexander of Oglethorpe Co. appoints friend, Joseph Dabbs of Franklin Co. as lawful attorney to obtain a legacy due me as a legatee of the estate of Thomas Sherman, deceased, of New Kent Co., Virginia, which estate is now in the hands of Henry Sherman of Bedford Co., Virginia or Campbell Co. Few Gordon is listed in Rockbridge Dist. of Gwinnett Co., Ga. on 1350 Census as a farmer. Clarissa was b. 1802 in Ga. Their only son: Dr. James M. Gordon b. 4/21/1821 Gwinnett Co., Ga.

Pa. m. Mary Few (1741-1807). According to Allens Genealogy, Thomas was son of John Gordon 2/7/1734-1766 and wife Sarah. During the American Revolution, Thomas lived at Gordonsville, Va.; was a Pvt. of 6th Va. Regt. Given land in Lee Co., Ga., 10th Dist. for service during the war. RIchmond Co., Ga. deed, to Thomas Gordon of Virginia, a lot in Augusta; 862 1/2 acres in Franklin Co., Ga., deeded from Thomas Connill dtd 1/25/1788. Richard Call of Augusta deeded to Thomas Gordon of Petersburg, Virginia and Thomas Conni1l of Augusta, Merchants in Common, land, dtd 4/26/1786. 5/1/1787, Thomas Gordon of Petersburg, Virginia, Merchant, deeded to William Kennedy and George Parker of Charleston, S.
