CALLAWAY, Job. "The family originated in America when Thomas Callaway was granted 766 acres in Virginia in 1665. His descendant, Col. John Callaway, was an officer of North Carolina in the American Revolution. John married Bethany Arnold and they had 12 children, according to his will. They settled in Wilkes County, Georgia about 1783-1785. John's uncle Richard Callaway went to Kentucky with Daniel Boone and it was his daughters, Elizabeth and Frances who were captured with Jemima Boone by Indians in 1776. Richard's son, Flanders Callaway, married Daniel Boone's daughter, Jemima. Callaway County, Kentucky took its name to honor this branch of the family. Children: Job, John, Jr., Isaac, Enoch, Adda, Nancy, Bethany, Betsy, Pheby, Mary, Lydia and a daughter who married Mr. Whiter. "John's son, the Rev. Enoch Callaway, was born in Wilkes County, in 1792. Enoch married in 1811 to Martha Reeves and they had 14 children. Among those fourteen was the Rev. Abner Callaway. The remarkable skills of every branch of the Troup County Callaways were found in the life of Rev. Abner Callaway at one time or the other.
