Kentucky Revolutionary War Pensions (Abstracts)



  • AARONS, Abraham, S31813, Kentucky, Adair Co., application dtd 11/29/1832, aged 73 on 8/17th last, and that he was drafted Militiaman 3/1780 in Capt. William Witcher's Co., 6 mos., in Pittsylvania Co., Va., marching to Salisbury, N. C.; thence to Camden; in battle of Stono in which the Americans were victorious and took a number of prisoners. He marched to various places through country, back to Camden, having served a full term. He lost his discharge many years ago. States he was b. in Lancaster Co., Fa. 3/17/1759 and was about 12 yrs. old when his father moved them to Pittsylvania Co., Va. where he lived a long time after the war; he lived in Greene Co., Tenn. until 1824; then removed to Adair Co., Kentucky where he now lives.


  • BRANK, Robert, S30893, Kentucky, Garrard Co., appro for pension 8/20/1832, age 75 and a few mos., b. in N. C. He vol. 1775 in Burke Co., N. C., served 3 mos. as Pvt., Capt. Leroy Taylor, Col. Christopher Bateman's N. C. Regt. Enl., same officers, 3 mos., in various skirmishes with Tories in N. C. Later, enl. 6 mos. under Capt. Joseph McDowell, N. C. Troops; enl. 6 mos. same officers; served 1 mo. in Col. Waitsill Aver's N. C. Regt. to guard the express to the valley towns. Soldier d. A/I0/1846, leaving no widow but 2 daus. (living 5/26/1853), Elizabeth Woods and Sophronia Brank.

  • DANIEL, William, 83263, Kentucky, Campbell Co., appl. dtd 6/24/1833, aged 71 on Jan. 18th, enl. 1778/9 under Capt. David Bigger, 3 mos. at Albemarle barracks guarding prisoners. Later, served 3 mos. under Capt. William Phillips. Charles Daniel states he is bro. of William Daniel, Rev. soldier. 7/24/1844, William requested transf. of his pension in Ky. to Cincinnati, Ohio Agency.

  • FRANKLIN, John. S35952, VA Line. Application 18 March 1818 in Warren County, Kentucky. In 1821 soldier was aged 73 (on Christmas with no family). It was stated that soldier died in 1822 leaving a widow and several children. The Widow supposedly survived the soldier by eleven years leaving several children. An inquiry was made on behalf of the children in 1859 by Robert M. Franklin (no relationship given).

  • HOWE, David, Sr., S13422, Kentucky, Fleming Co., appl. dtd 12/3/1832, aged 85, was b. 3/8/1747 Cumberland Co., Pa. and moved to York Co., S. C. with his father in 1772. His birth was taken from his father's Bible. Enl. York Co. 10/1778 to 3/1779, Co. of Dragoons, Capt. Hawthorn, Col. Sumter's Regt., was at Brier Creek battle; enl. 3/1779 to 11/1781, militia, Col. Sumter, was in battle June or July 1779 Catawba River, Bigger's Ferry; at Rocky Mt. 7/30/1780; at Hanging Rock 8/6/1780; at Fishing Cr. 8/18/1780; King's Mt. 10/7/1780. He lived York Co., S. C. from 11/1781 til fall 1792 when he moved to Ky., where he has lived 36 yrs. in Co. of Fleming.

  • JORDAN, George, 831176, Kentucky, Anderson Co., appl. dtd 8/10/1832, aged 76, enl. Culpepper Co., Va. 1776-1778, Pvt., Capt. John Thornton, Col. Hugh Mercer's 3rd Re.gt., at battles of Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine, Germantown. 1894 letter from Thomas R. Jordan of North K. and Prospect, Tacoma, Washington, stating George Jordan was his grandfather.

    JORDAN, Peter, W9091, Kentucky, Fayette Co., apple dtd 9/22/1820, aged 70, res. Mercer Co., enl. 1776 Frederick Co., Va., Capt. Clarke, 8th Va. Regt., Col. Borrman, 2 yrs., disch. by Gen. Scott. His orig. declare dtd 10/11/1819, was farmer, having wife and 4 children. A son, aged 17, and 3 daus. Susannah, wid. of Peter who d. 8/2/1824 Mercer Co., 9/24/1838, appeared before J. P., aged 76, was married 1786, abt. 2-3 wks. before Christmas in Frederick Co., Va. on waters of Cedar Cr. Deposition of Mrs. Mary Desponette taken at house of Mrs. Susannah Jordan, Mercer Co., 9/24/1838 that she is 1st child of sd Susannah and Peter, b. 1787 in Oct. or Nov., now 51 yrs. old and remembers well her father and mother moved from Frederick Co., Va. to Ky. in fall of 1797 and Mercer Co., abt 5/1798 and her father d. 8/2/1824. Mother is still living, abt 75 or 76 yrs. old. Deposition of Col. John M. Jordan, son of Peter and Susannah, b. 1789, aged 49.

  • JORDAN, Marshall, W9090, Kentucky, Clarke Co., appl. dtd 10/10/1850, letter from Marshall D. Jordan "a few days since I got letter addressed to my mother, Efferilla Jordan regarding increasing her pension, she died 1/13th last. II and he is one of her heirs. Sharshall Jordan d. 9/28/1813 Clarke Co., Ga. Appl. of Effarilla Jordan, aged 88, wid., dtd 12/11/1843, states husband was Lt. in Rev. War., in Militia from Culpepper Co., Va., commd. Ens. 2/2/1776, promoted to Lt. til close of war, Col. Thomas' Regt., Capt. Eusame, served 2-3 yrs., says he was gone from home half of his time and when he was gone she had to work in the corn field to provide for her chikldren. She had 4 children. She heard husband speak of being in several battles and has heard William Write, who drew a pension, and Martin Johnson say that they served under Lt. Marshall Jordan in war.

  • SMITH, Henry, W9300, Kentucky, Harlan Co., appl. dtd 5/21/1836, aged 74 or 75, was b. Brunswick Co., Va., where enl. 9/1776 or 1777, Capt. Andrew Geter, commanded to raise troops for Ga., marched to Savannah, Ga., served in Gidson Bookers Co., 3rd Ga. Regt., trsf. to Capt. Nash's Co., Lt. Infantry, Col. McIntosh, 3rd Regt., taken prisoner at Sunbury, carried to Savannah River, onboard prison ship for 6 mos., 9 days, then impelled by fear and cruel treatment and with idea of escaping to American Army, enlisted in British Army served til 9/2. when deserted and made his way to army at Charleston, disch.; enl. Peedee River, S. C., Capt. Rush, disch. at beg. of siege of Charleston, served 3 mos. Lived after war S. C. abt 1790 or 1791, moved to Burke Co., N. C. til 1804, then Ky. Soldier married 8/12/1792 in S. C., Elizabeth Ledford, her apple dtd 5/23/1850, aged 75, Harlan Co., Ky. Their 8 children living in 1850: Sally Omay, abt 56; Robert; Stacey Turner, aged 46; Mary; William; John; Mary. Two bros. of soldier, John and George Smith. In 1850, Aly Ledford, b. 11/1787, lived Harlan Co., stated that wid., Elizabeth Ledford Smith, was his niece. One, William Ledford, aged 78, lived Yancy Co., N. C. Soldier d. 8/15/1836.
