Bowman of Shenandoah Coounty, Virginia and Kentucky
George Bowman settled on Cedar Creek, north of Strasburg, Virginia.
He was captain of Frederick County militia for the Shenandoah Valley in 1760 and justice of Augusta county in 1769.
In 1769 he was commissioned lieutenant of Kentucky; in 1776 commander of the Kentucky expedition against the Ohio Indians;
in 1781, first sheriff of Lincoln County, Kentucky.
He was married to Mary Hite, daughter of Jost Hite.
They had thirteen sons and daughters. Issue:
- John Jacob Bowman, born 2 Dec 1733, killed during the battle of Remson's Mill on 20 June 1780. He was married to Grizel Greenlee.
- Abraham Bowman, born 16 Nov 1742, resident of Shenandoah County, commissioned as a Colonel during the Revolutionary War. Removed
to Kentucky. He was Colonel of the 8th Virginia Regiment during the revolution; founder of Bowmans Station in
Madison County, Kentucky, and a member of the Kentucky constitutional convention from Fayette County in 1825.
- Joseph Bowman, born 1752, Major during the Revolutionary War under General Clark. He died of wounds near Vincennes in August of 1779.
Served with Clark in the Illinois campaign.
- Isaac Bowman, born 24 April 1757 at Cedar Creek, served with Clark in the Illinois campaign. In November of 1779 he was captured by Indians, but escaped.
Issue:
- Philip Bowman married Isabelle Richardson, removed to Indiana.
