Albright, W. H.....one of the most successful business men of the county of Meriwether, was born in Sumpter, Ga., in 1840, the son of Oswald and Sarah A. (Wheless) Albright. His father was born Feb. 29, 1819, in Franklin county, Ga., of which county his parents, Jacob and Mary (Dixon) Albright, who were natives of North Carolina, were among the earliest settlers. He, Oswald Albright, in 1836, ran away from home to serve in the Indian war. His wife was the daughter of Abb and Polly (Tindall) Wheless, natives of Virginia, who made Georgia their home at an early date. Although born in Georgia, young Albright. (W.H.) passed his boyhood and youth on a farm in Russell county, Ala. and returned to this state in 1858. He received such education as the country schools could afford, supplemented by one term at college, and also taught seven terms. Then, as did many of his comrades, he laid aside his high hopes, and responded to the call of duty, enlisting in 1861, in a company under Capt. Dubose, attached to the Fifth North Carolina battalion. But on account of his disabilities, the young man was discharged in 1862, and returned home the next year broken in health and without a cent wherewith to make a start in life. He, however, possessed superior qualifications, which fitted him for a business career, and he embarked in the mercantile trade, in which his success has been marvelous. By industry, integrity and persistent application to business he has amassed a fortune, and is one of the most honored citizens of this county. His wife was Miss Sarah Humphries, born in Meriwether county in 1844, the daughter of Charles F. and Elizabeth (Sewell) Humphries, the former born in South Carolina in 1814, and an early settler of Georgia. Mr. and Mrs. Albright have been blessed with seven children, four of whom are living: William A., John O., Thomas D., and James C. The parents are both faithful members of the Methodist Episcopal church, and Mr. Albright is also a prominent Mason. He traces with pride the genealogy of his family to the day of the pilgrim fathers, when, in 1620, the first Albright landed in America. This man, named Jacob, was the father of four sons, and through them rose the families of that name throughout America. Two counties of North Carolina – Guilford and Alamance – were named for members of the Albright family, who were noteworthy and popular. Source: Memoirs of Georgia, Meriwether County Sketches.

Allen, George, born 12/3/1754 per Overwharton Parish Register, Stafford Co., VA.
Allen, George, son of Richard, born 10/25/1721 per St. Peters Parish Register, New Kent Co., VA.
Allen, George D. (Capt.) comes of Old Dominion stock. His father, Maj. W. A. Allen, was born in Amelia county, Va., in 1815, and reared on a plantation. He, with his father, Capt. Alexander Allen, removed to Bedford county, Tenn., in 1834, where he married Martha E. Davidson, daughter of George Davidson, who was a native North Carolinian. Maj. Allen, while a resident of Tennessee, was a man of distinction and influence, having served a term in the senate of that state. After the war he came south and located at Forsyth, Ga., where he now resides, enjoying, by choice, the life of a quiet citizen, much loved and respected by the people of his community.Capt. George D. Allen was born in Shelbyville, Tenn., Dec. 30, 1843, and passed his boyhood days on the home plantation, and was being educated at the Shelbyville university when war became the cry. He at once enlisted in Company B, Forty-first Tennessee regiment of the C. S. A., and served through the entire four years. His service, for the most part, was in the Army of the West, where he was in all the important battles. At the fall of Fort Donelson, in 1862, he was captured and spent seven months in prison at Indianapolis. He was exchanged in time to take part in the siege of Vicksburg. From this time he served as aide-de-camp to Gen. H. B. Davidson, and at the close of the war was on the right flank of Lee's immortal band at Appomattox. Capt. Allen returned to his father's country home in June, 1865. The following October he married Miss M. Eufaula Scandrett, an accomplished lady of Griffin, Ga. They are the parents of eight children, four of whom are living: Lawson D., George D., Jr.; Harry S., and Stewart W., all of whom are now having the best educational advantages. Capt. Allen came to Georgia in 1866, engaged in cotton planting two years, and in 1868 embarked in the mercantile business at Forsyth, Ga. He was chairman of board county commissioners and mayor of the city. It was during his administration and largely owing to his energy and influence that the Monroe Female college, the oldest female college in the south, was rebuilt. The year 1884 marks the date of Capt. Allen's coming to Macon, since which he has been one of her most energestic and successful business men. He engaged in the wholesale grocery trade, and in 1890 organized the firm of Allen & Dumas Co., of which he was president and general manager. In December, 1894, he became sole owner of the business, which includes the Juliette water mills, located at Juliette, Ga., twenty-two miles north of Macon, on the Southern railway, and one of the largest and best-equipped grist mills in the south. Capt. Allen is, in religion, a Methodist, is a Knight Templar Mason, and a citizen of whom Macon may well feel proud for his enterprise and ability. Source: Memoirs of Georgia.

Allen, John T., Judge of the county court, Milledgeville, Baldwin co. James Troup Allen, was born at Mt. Zion, Hancock county, Oct. 21, 1861. His father is, and all his life has been a farmer in Hancock county., During the late war he was a non-commissioned officer in the Confederate service and remained until the surrender. Judge Allen was raised on the farm, and received such education as the near by schools could give, and in 1880, when the middle Georgia military institute opened its doors a Milledgeville, he entered that institution, graduating from it in 1883. He then entered the law department of the university of Georgia at Athens, which he graduated in 1884, and was at once admitted to the bar, but returned to his home at Mt. Zion. Early in the ensuing year he came to Milledgeville, and in April formed a law partnership with Hon. Robert Whitfield, which still continues. He is a well-read and able lawyer, credibly sustaining the dignity of his judicial position, to which he was elected in 1889 and after serving four years was re-elected. Judge ALLEN was married Nov. 27, 1890 to Miss Hattie, daughter of H. E. Hendrix, of Milledgeville, by whom he has had three children: Marion, Isabelle A., and Gladys Pernita. He is a member of the I.O.O. F., a royal arch Mason, and affiliates with the Presbyterian church. Source: Biographies from Memoirs of Georgia Vol. II, The Southern Historical Association 1895

Anderson, J. W., physician, Ringgold, was born in Catoosa county, March 12, 1863. His father is John R. Anderson, a native of Virginia, born Dec. 13, 1823, who settled at Crawfordville, Ga., in his youth with his parents and became a citizen of Catoosa county in 1848. In 1857 he married Hattie Samas, of Calhoun, formerly of Monroe county, a lady highly connected. Her grand-uncle was Hon. William H. Crawford. Her uncle was Hon. N. C. Barnett, for many years secretary of state, and one of the leading citizens of Georgia. By their marriage they had two children, J. W. and Carmetia, the wife of Dr. Thomas Hackett, of Catoosa county. Dr. Anderson was reared in Catoosa county and was educated at the Masonic Literary institute in Ringgold. For several years he was in the service of the Western Atlantic Railway company as conductor. He resolved to prepare himself for the medical profession, and began the study of medicine at Ringgold with Dr. T. Hackett. Later he entered the college of physicians and surgeons at Baltimore, Md., and prosecuted his studies at this institution during 1883-84, completing his course at the Southern Medical college in Atlanta, Georgiawhere he was graduated in March, 1885. In 1889 he commenced the practice of his profession at Ringgold, where he has attained excellent success and enjos a large general practice in Catoosa county and in the state of Tennessee. In his professional calling he has acquired the confidence of his patients and the public generally by reason of his skill as a physician, and his standing as a gentleman and a citizen. His standard of professional ethics is high, and he is popular among his professional brethren. On December 23, 1890, he was married to Miss Annie L. Jones, daughter of Capt. R. J. Jones, of Catoosa county, and at present clerk of the superior court. The mother of Dr. Anderson died in Catoosa County in 1886. His father is still living in this county. Dr. Anderson is a member of the masonic fraternity, Quitman lodge No. 106, at Ringgold.

Anderson, Richard, Sr., son of John, of Watford, Herts, England, yeoman. Richard Sr. and his son, Richard Jr. booked passage out of the port of London 7/4/1635, Richard Sr. travelling onboard the ship Merchants Hope, and Richard Jr., age 17, onboard the ship Transport, destination: Virginia. This places the date of birth of Richard Anderson as 1585. He married 12/20/1611 Elizabeth Hawkins, the daughter of William Hawkins, deceased. Ten years before this date (1635) Thomas and John Anderson, two Englishmen, came to Jamestown in the ship Bonaventure. The next year there came Richard Anderson, aged 50, in the ship, Merchants Hope. He was probably the father of Thomas and John, as Richard has been a family name in this branch ever since. The tradition is that the founder of the family was Thomas Anderson of Northumberland, England, who settled as a shipwright at Gloucester Point comes from History of Virginia Andersons ....I received my opinion from a Colonel Robert Waller, ... he told me that in his student dayhs he had gone to William and Mary College with a relative of mine and that he had long been familiar with our family history. He said that the first Virginia Anderson was a shipwright at Gloucester Point. About the same time, General William Tollieferro pointed out a place on the west shore of the Chesapeake which he said had been the first home of the Andersons. Therefore, while John Anderson lived in York Co., Thomas Anderson lived at Gloucester Point, across the York River from York Co., VIrginia. The Point is across from Yorktown. Richard Anderson, Jr., of course, lived in York and Gloucester Counties; also, across the York River from New Kent County where the former's son (Robert Anderson) died. Andrews,, T. H. Among the able and skilled physicians of Cuthbert, Randolph Co., Dr. T.H. Andrews holds an honored and enviable position. He was born in 1846, in Gadsden county, Fla., and is the son of Frederick and Eliza (Odom) Andrews. Frederick Andrews was a native of and grew up in Pulaski county, Ga., and there married his wife. Soon after their marriage they moved to Lee county, where they remained about one year, thence to Randolph county, which was their home for several years. There he served as tax collector of the county, and for awhile taught school and engaged in a mercantile business in Cuthbert. In 1844 he moved his family to Florida, where he died in 1846. He was one of the foremost men of his day, and possessed an excellent education for his time; the result of a quick grasping mind, and wide reading and study. His schooling was meager, but he gained great learning through close application to books. He was a devotee to music and possessed remarkable skill in, and knowledge of this art. Of literary tastes, he was a frequent contributor to the early newspapers and periodicals of the state. He was a captain in the Indian war of 1835-36, and was a democrat of potent influence. After her husband's death Mrs. Andrews returned to Randolph county, Ga., where she resided until her demise at the age of seventy-four years. She was a woman of great intellectuality, and a happy disposition that accorded with her husband's character, and their domestic life was a beautiful example of love and devotion. Her father was James Odom, of Pulaski county, Ga. The Odoms were early settlers of Pulaski county, and her grandfather, James Odom, was a revolutionary soldier, who lived to the age of one hundred and ten years. The family was wealthy and eminent in political and social standing. Six of the children born to Mr. and Mrs. Andrews lived to maturity, and of these five are now living; James F. of Early county; D.C. of Randolph county; W.P. of Early county; Mrs. Susan Morgan, of Early county, and Dr. T.H., the subject of this sketch. Warren Andrews, another son, was a member of the Fifty-fourth Georgia regiment, and as a brigade drummer was captured at the battle of the Wilderness and died of smallpox at Rock Island soon after. Dr. T.H. Andrews began the study of medicine in 1869 in the office of Dr. Rodgers, of Columbus, Ga. He attended lectures and was graduated from the university of Pennsylvania, at Philadelphia, March 12, 1875. His first year of practice was in Decatur county, then he moved to Randolph county, where he has since followed his profession. He located in the winter of 1876-77 on the farm he now owns. He possessed no more than his profession, but with a brave will and great energy he has succeeded so well in life that he can now look out over an estate of 2,500 acres of land, 400 of which is in a high state of cultivation, a large residence and fine out-buildings. Dr. Andrews was married April 27, 1876, to Addie B. Jordan, of Putnam county, a daughter of Wiley B. Jordan of that county. Archer, Albert, Event:Birth, Event Date:11/6/1907, County:Fulton, City:Atlanta, Notes:boy, Atlanta. Source: Atlanta Constitution.
Archer, James M., planter, Hancock Co., Ga. The gentleman herein named is one of the old-school planters of Hancock county, and is living on the same plantation which his father cultivated before him. He is one of that class of planters who believe in raising their own hog and hominy. who make their farms self-substaining, and who are to-day the only prosperous people in the state. Would that Georgia had more of them. They are the bone and sinew of the country. Grandfather William Archer came to Hancock county early in the present century. He lived to a good old age, and reared a large and prosperous family. William was the father of James M. and was born in the county in 1812. He married in 1833 Miss Elizabeth Jackson, who was of German descent, and was also a native of the county. But two children were born to the union: William J., who married and reared a family in the county, and died in 1889, and James M, whose name heads this sketch. The mother of these boys was a woman of fine qualities, and taught them to fear God and regard man in all the walks of life. She died at a ripe old age in 1878. William Archer was a man of iron Constitution and had a capacity and will for hard work equalled by but few in his day. He began life in very moderate circumstances and by middle age had placed himself in the ranks of the wealthy planters of the county. The was no accomplished by trading and short practices, but by actually digging it out of the soil. During his life-time he was a liberal supporter of the Baptist church, and is remembered as a man of large hospitality and generous impulses. he died in 1887. James M. Archer has followed in his father's footsteps, and is looked upon as a man equally as valuable to the community. His public spirit is proverbial, and he occupies a high place in church and society, holding the respect of all who know him. He was born Jan. 12, 1837, and was given such education as the common schools of the county afforded. He married his present estimable wife, Clarissa Ann Peeler, March 21, 1861. She was a daughter of Rev. Berry Peeler, who came from South Carolina, and was for many years prior to his death a prominent and gifted minister of the Baptist church. Twelve children resulted from this union as follows: Ida J., deceased; Addie L., widow of Dr. L. S. Garner, living now with her parents; William B., deceased; Flavious J., planter, Hancock county; Sarah B., deceased; Green P.; J. Harvey, an infant, unnamed; Anna May, Jesse Mercer, Lillian E., and Isaac Holmes. Mr. Archer is one of the heaviest land-owners in the county, paying tax on some 3,000 acres of land. He lives on the old Archer plantation, eight miles south of Sparta, in a commodious new house, surrounded by such comforts as make life pleasant in the county. During the late war he did his whole duty as a private soldier in Company E, Thirty-second Georgia regiment, Col. George P. Harrison, commanding. he enlisted in 1862 and served on the coast defenses in South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, participated in the battle of Ocean Pond, in the latter state, and the bombardment of Battery Wagoner, near Savannah. Mr. Archer is a democrat in political belief, and a deacon in the Baptist church. Socially he is regarded highly, being a gentleman of entertaining conversational powers and of most hospitable disposition. Source: Memoirs of Georgia Volume 1Historical Society of Georgia, 1895.

Arnold. The first Arnold to America was William Arnold, the founder of Rhode Island along with Roger Williams. His son, the first Benedict, was the longest-serving governor of that colony. He had a drinking issue and his wife, Hannah, was determined to raise little Benedict not to drink so took him to church every Sunday. Benedict Arnold (1741-1801) became a successful field and naval commander but was passed over by Congress for a promotion. He was denied pay and lost his personal fortune. After he was wounded the second time and ignored, he was in Philadelphia as military Governor and had to deal with Congress on a daily basis. During the process he lost respect for the men who served as congressmen, thinking that they did not have the stuffing to win the revolution. Benedict was married to Peggy Shippen who played a big hand in persuading him that the Americans could not win. Later, the Queen of England gave her a pension for services rendered, which pretty well established Peggy as a spy. Arrington,, W. S. planter, of Randolph county, is a native of Georgia, and was born in Baldwin county in 1844. His grandfather was Frederick Arrington, of English ancestors, who lived and died in North Carolina. His demise was at an early age, and he left a widow and two children: Hardy and Laronia. Hardy Arrington, when sixteen years old, moved to Washington county, Ga., where he married Mary Smith, a native of that county. Soon afterward they changed to Baldwin county, then to Lee county, where they resided two years, thence to Randolph, and there they settled in the fourth district, where a year later (1845) Mr. Arrington died, in his thirty-third year. The widow was married again to Solomon Owens, who is yet living. By the first marriage she was the mother of James Arrington, who went west before the war and died in service; Lorinia, wife of Hardy Hay, living in Texas; Georgiana, wife of Thomas Newton, now deceased; Laronia, who died single, and Mr. W.S. Arrington, the subject of this sketch. By her marriage with Mr. Owen were born: Jessie Owens, and Mary, wife of Richard Stewart, living, and John, deceased. Mrs. Owens remained at the old homestead until her death in 1887, aged seventy years. She was a devoted a devoted wife, a kind mother and a sincere Christian. The subject of this sketch was but a small boy when his parents came to Randolph county, and there he grew to his majority. He farmed the two years immediately proceeding the war, and when the ------ of civil strife was sounded he left the furrow to enlist with the army of the south. March 12, 1862, he joined the famed Company H, Fifty-first Georgia volunteers, under Capt. Balls, and served until wounded in the Shenandoah Valley campaign, at Cedar creek, September, 1864. His company was in Longstreet's corps, Lee's army of North Virginia, and was in the thickest of the fighting, at the second battle of Manassas, at South Mountain, Md., Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, the Wilderness and Gettysburg. Then he was back to Funkstown, Md., Cold Harbor and Petersburg. The corps went to Knoxville, Tenn, then back to Lee's army. At the battle of Cedar Creek, when Mr. J.T. Bailey, member of Company H, and from Randolph county, was wounded while carrying the colors, it was Mr. Arrington who took them from his hands. A few minutes later he, in turn, was shot through the side and forced to give up the flag to a comrade. He was taken prisoner on the field of battle and sent to a hospital in Baltimore, and upon his recovery was released and sent home, in March, 1865. Mr. Arrington was married to Martha Lee, a native of Sumter county, and daughter of Jefferson Lee. The father died in Sumter county, leaving three daughters and one son. The latter was Thomas Lee, who was killed during the war. The daughters were: Caroline, wife of John Belcher, now living in Florida; Martha and Sylvania, now deceased, who was married to a Mr. Raegen. Mrs. Jefferson Lee died about 1879. Mrs. Arrington, as a girl, attended the schools of Sumter county and at Americus, and when her mother moved tof Randolph county entered the schools of that county and finished her education. Mr. and Mrs. Arrington have had born to them two children: Alice, wife of A.E. Mazell, and Ionaci. The latter attended school at La Grange and spent three years at Eufaula, Ala., under the instruction of Miss Simmons. She is accomplished in the science of music and is now in the Shellman high school. The family are members of the Baptist church. After the war Mr. Arrington devoted himself to farming. He was interested in a merchandise business at Shellman for about eight years, the same being looked after by his son-in-law, Mr. Mazell. Mr. Arrington owns several fine farms in Randolph county and has 1,000 acres of land under cultivation. He is familiarly known to his friends as General, a title given him in the army by his companions, who believed that his bravery was of a caliber commensurate with the appellation.
