Ward, Benjamin F., Major, died a few days at his home in Butts Co., 85 years old. When he was a boy he was a student of William H. Seward, afterwards secretary of state, under President Lincoln, who taught a country school in Putnam County., near his father's plantation on the Oconee River. He later practiced law at Monticello. Major Ward purchased the McIntosh Reserve in Butts Co., which was the home of General McIntosh, chief of the Creek Indians. The Constitution, Atlanta 10/15/1886

Whittle, Lewis Neal died 2-17. He was born in Norfolk, Virginia May 15, 1818. His father was Fortescue Whittle of Belfast, Ireland who removed to America and married Miss Mary Davies, the granddaughter of President Davies of Princeton College, New Jersey. Miss Davies was a lineal descendant of Powhatan, the ruler of thirty tribes of American Indians. Among those who survive Mr. Whittle are Colonel James M. and Dr. Conway D. Whittle, being 80 and 77 years old, residents of Virginia, and Rev. FGrancis M. Whittle, bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church of the diocese of Virginia. Powhatan B. Whittle, younger brother, who was colonel of the 18th Virginia regiment, lives in Valdosta. Lewis N. was edcuated at the Mecklenburg County common school, then attended Henry County Academny, and at seventeen was employed as rodman on an engineering corps employed in the survey of the James River. In December of 1835 he came to Macon. In 1842 he married Miss Sarah M. Powers, the daughter of a prominent planter of middle Georgia. In 1845 he was president of the Monroe Railroad and Banking Co. Mrs. Whittle's death occurred in 1871, buried Rose Hill Cemetery and 11 of their 12 children. The Constitution, Atlanta 2-18-1886

Wilkes. Mr. McCormack, while drinking (in Polk County), mistreated his wife. Mr. Wilkes, marshal of Cedartown, and Mr. Meeks, jailor, went out to arrest McCormack. The latter drew his knife, whereupon he was shot by the parties arresting him and immediately killed. Meeks and Wilkes both have died. The Marietta Journal 6/11/1875.

Williams, John, Esq., Capt. in the corps of U. S. Marines. He was born in Stafford Co., Virginia on August 21, 1765, and died on September 29, 1812 in Camp New Hope, in East Florida. On the 11th day of September 1812 Captain Williams, on his march with a command of 20 men, to Davis Creek, Block House in East Florida, was attacked towards evening by upwards of 50 Indians and negroes who lay concealed in the woods. He instantly gave battle, gallantly supported by his men. At length, bleeding under eight galling wounds and unable to stand, he was carried off the battlefield. Yarbrough, Elisha. "Hanged. Elisha Yarbrough, the murderer of Henry W. Smith of Carroll County, was hanged in Carrollton, on Friday last. Before his execution he confessed his guilt and acknowledged that he and he alone was responsible for the murder of Smith.
