James Evans was born about 1670. He died in Potomac Freshes, Maryland. James EVANS had the following children:

David Evans, Emigrant to Maryland. He was born about 1690. and died in Prince George Co, Maryland, married Ann in 1715 in Prince George Co., Queen Anne Parish, MD. Family tradition says that David Evans married Anne Arden, however, nothing has been found in the Maryland records to substantiate this. There is an obscure reference about 169_ of James Arden of the "Potomoc Freshes", mentioned in Virginia patents. Issue:

I. Eleanor EVANS was born on 5 Oct 1716 in Queen Anne Parish, Prince Geo Co., Maryland, married David Jones. Prince George Co., Va. Estate of David JONES dtd Apr 1719. The deposition of David JONES, Charles City Co., Va. 1618, stating his age. Charles City Co., Va. Court Orders (1655-1658), p. 104, David JONES, age 63, petition, dtd 8/3/1657.

II. John EVANS was born on 21 Aug 1717 in Queen Anne Par., Prince Geo Co., Maryland.

III. Arden EVANS was born on 5 Mar 1720 in Queen Anne, Parish, Prince Geo. Co., Maryland. Arden Evans was a resident of Frederick Co. in 1749, where, along with his wife, Susannah, he was remembered in the LWT of Thomas Ball, being made sole exr.

"I give to my daughter, Susannah Evans -- one gold         mourning ring". Also, "To Lawrence O'Neal and William  O'Neal, Jr. a tract of land called "Token of Love". It appears that   Thomas Ball's daughter, Eleanor, was married an O'Neal of Prince George Co., Maryland. See Will Book 26, page 35, Frederick Co., MD, 1749. Arden Evans lived in the vicinity of Thomas Ball. A deed dated 12/18/1750, Arden Evans sold to Thomas Dowden, stock and household effects. Frederick Co., MD Deed Book B, page 318. A witness was William O'Neal. Arden Evans was in the process of disposing of his property in Frederick Co., MD, and removed himself to Bedford Co., Va, as he witnessed a deed (with Joshua and Jesse Abston) dated 6/20/1760 made by Ann Chiles of Halifax Co., Va. to John Chiles of Albemarle Co., Va., 100 acres on north side of Staunton River. On 3/26/1756 Arden Evans was appointed overseer of the road to be cleared from Irvins Ford on the river to Clements Ford on the Staunton River (Oldest Order Book 5/1754, 8/1761 Bedford Co., Va.). The Bedford Co., Va. land records reflect Arden Evans purchasing land from Jonathan Jennings of Pittsylvania Co., land on Briery Creek, a north branch of the Staunton River, dated 5/6/1769. Also, a map of Arden Evansss' land, 11/14/1770, Bedford Co., Va. Deed Book, page 126, "Surveyed for Arden Evans 240 acres which, with nine acres, a whole patent, and twenty-two acres, purchased of Charles Lynch (343 acres) in Bedford Co., west side of Otter River." On 8/29/1779 Arden Evans sold the land on Briery Creek to Thomas Harddy, 9/24/1771. Susannah, the wife of Arden Evans, relinquished her right of dower. Bedford Co., Va. Deed Book D, page 163. Apparently Arden Evans was granted 384 acres of land on 2/28/1779 in Bedford Co. He must have sold this land as Arden Evans and Susannah, his wife, of Pittsylvania Co., Va. to Richard Bloxham of Louisa Co., being land in Campbell Co., on waters of Hills and Cheese Creeks, being 384 acres. (Bedford Co. Deed Book 2, page 411).

He was married to Susan BALL (daughter of Thomas BALL) in 1746 of Prince Geo Co, Maryland. Susan BALL was born about 1725 in Prince George Co, Maryland. Issue:

William Evans received a land grant 12/16/1773 in Pittsylvania Co., Va., 349 acres located on the northside of Chestnut Mountain, Muddy fork of Chestnut Creek (Virginia Land Grants, Vol E, page 609). Also, another land grant on 2/27/1775 for 315 acres (Book E, page 487, Land Grants, Richmond, Va.), however, in this instance William Evans acted as assignee of Benjamin Clement, who was assignee of Thomas Dillard and Isaac Clements. Again, William Evans acquired Pittsylvania Co., Va. land, on 8/2/1777, from Benjamin Clement, Jr. and wife, Mary of Pittsylvania Co., 129 acres, bounded by Benjamin Clements, the Elder. (Pittsylvania Co., Va. Deed Book 6, page 75). On Oct. 1797 a legacy for William Evans is paid by the Benjamin Clements' estate to Charles Lynch, Jr. in Pittsylvania Co., Va. It seems that Charles Lynch, Jr. purchased Evans' share of the estate on 11/26/1790. (Campbell Co., Va. Deed Book 3, page 80). The will of Benjamin Clements reads: "One part to Susannah Evans, her heiress, or assigns". (Will Book B, page 116, Pittsylvania Co., Va., Will of Benjamin Clements). Prothonotary files     indicate Mary, and husband Valentine Huff, Christian        MERCKEL and wife Juliana KERST, George, Henry and Francis Kerst were summoned to appear in a land dispute with       Anthony Jaeger(Hunter) in 1765. Franz KERST had requested a         trial by jury in his will over some inheritance and land

Valentine Huff was later found in 1771, Prince George County, Maryland. Prince George County, Maryland, Deeds, Book AA#2, p. 357.  28 October 1771, Jacob Funk to Valentine Hoff, two lots of land in Hamburgh.

He appears to have lived in Frederick County, Maryland where he was a cartwright until about 1776 when he removed to Rowan County, North Carolina. I have found that typically, Germans migrated from Pennsylvania, thence crossing over the Shenandoah, into Frederick County, Maryland, some going to Rowan County, North Carolina. Apparently, they found German settlements in these areas, where the language was spoken.

I. William Sherrill was born in 1670, died 1747 in Tennessee. He was found in Cecil Co., Maryland in 1702 when he purchased 150 acres of land called "Price's Forest", located on the east side of the Elk River, from William Price, Sr. 8 Mar 1702, Cecil County Maryland Land Records 1, ff255-6.

Lancaster Historical Society, Vol. 19, p. 278: 1718. "Over the east of Peques Creek, the English and Scotch-Irish, beginning about the neighborhood of Martinville and going down the creek, were: William and Robert Middleton, Albert Hendrick, William Sherrill, David Jones, Samuel Jones, John Robinson, John McCreary, practically all on the east side of Peques Creek."

William must have removed to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1718 when he appeared on the Tax Rolls; again in 1721, Conestoga Township; 1722 in West Conestoga, Donegal Township; 1725 to 1729, West Conestoga Township, Lancaster County. He is referred to as "the Conestoga fur trader". It appears that he took the traditional emigration path, the road from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, into the Shenandoah Valley.

B. Adam Sherrill was born 1697 in Cecil Co., Maryland, died 1772 Rowan County, North Carolina. He was buried on 4 May 1774 in Yadkin River Sec., Rowan Co. Adam Sherrill established Sherrill's Ford on the banks of the Catawba River. His home was located nearby. He apparently migrated from Pennsylvania to Maryland, Virginia, then to North Carolina and the wilderness of the Catawba River.

On 1 Sept 1736 Adam Sherrill of Cecil Co., Maryland, yeoman, sold to Samuel Caldwell, late of Lancaster Co., Pa., yeoman, land known as "Three Partners"[51] and whereas the said Thomas Jacobs did give, grant, convey and confirm until William Sherwill, father o f the said Adam Sherwill, 200 acres of land, part of "Three Partners", by deed of judgment 13 Dec 1725 entered in Maryland Hall of Records of Cecil in Liber SK, No. 5, Folio 9-10... Now know ye that he, the said Adam Sherwill and Elizabeth, his wife, for 50 pds. of Pennsylvania money....acknowledge and confirm unto the said Samuel Caldwell the 100 acres of land. (Cecil Co. Deeds, Vol 5, Folio 228).

A Land Warrant was found for him in Charles County, Maryland, "of Prince George County, Maryland" dated 20 October 1740, ... hath due unto him 100 acres of land within our said Province by virtue of a warrant...granted him 11 Jan 1738.[52] His name was found listed in an inventory of the effects found on a strange man who drowned in the Potomack River and taken upon 8 Aug 1738, Orange County, Virginia[53].

He must have removed to Augusta County, Virginia, as a deed dated 26 Sept 1748 exists between Adam Sherrill of Augusta County, Colony of Virginia, farmer, to Amos Thatcher of Prince George County, for 100 pounds money of Pennsylvania.

Adam Sherrill obtained a land grant on April 1749 in Anson County (formerly Bladen), North Carolina. This territory later became known as Lincoln County, North Carolina. Adam's land and the surrounding area ultimately became known as "Sherrill's Ford".

His descendants erected a monument to his pioneering in this area, and the town of Sherrill's Ford today commemorates this historical family.

Some say that the old house in which Adam Sherrill resided still stands at Sherrill's Ford.
