Augustine Smith
SMITH, Augustine, 823911, Virginia, Nelson Co., appl. dtd 11/1/1832, aged 80, was born in Westmoreland Co., Va., his parents removing to Amherst Co. when he was a small boy. He enl. in 7th Va. Regt., 2 yrs., Capt. Samuel Cabell, Lt. Benjamin Tolliver, in Amherst Co., Va., and received injury in his back, given furlough to recover, but could not walk or get out of bed for several yrs. On the way home, he was met by his bro., John Smith, and Joel Shropshire, both of whom are now dead. He res. Amherst Co., Va. since war, that part which later became Nelson Co. Affidavit dtd 5/26/1835 of Mary Smith, extrx of LWT of Augustine Smith, stating he d. testate 12/1/1832 without a wife or surviving children, that he was never married. Included in file is LWT of Augustine Smith dtd 12/26/1830, pvd 12/24/1832 in Nelson Co., Va., leaving his land and property to his sister, Mary Smith and names two other sisters--Sally Lowe and Judith Smitht disqualifying his bro.-in-law, William Lowe, husband of sister, Sally "who has long been absent" from any benefits.
