Colonel Ambrose Gordon
Ambrose Gordon was born on June 28, 1751. He was a Lieutenant of Cavalry during the American Revolution (1775 to 1783), serving under Colonel William Washington, a nephew of U.S. president George Washington. Ambrose Gordon settled in Augusta after the war and was granted a large tract of land in recognition of his military services. He and his wife named their eldest son for Ambrose's commanding officer." Died last Thursday in his 53rd year, Colonel Ambrose, late of Savannah. He died at the home of Edward Rowell in Chatham County, and was buried in St Paul's Churchyard. Pall-bearers: Brigadier General Glascock, Colonel Watkins, Colonel Flournoy, Majors Hutchinson, Blair and Watkins. The deceased entered the Army at an early period in the Revolutionary War and bore a commission in the Cavalry and distinguished himself as an officer. He was in failing health for two or three years and was on his way to the Warm Springs when taken ill at Mr Rowells.
