Peter Coffey, Jr.
Peter Coffey, born in Ireland, was listed as an early settler of Prince Edward County, Virginia. He was born in Ireland and known to be prisoner in the Newgate Prison in London in 1730. Newgate housed offenders from London, Middlesex, and Ireland, for various and sundry crimes, including the inability to pay debts. Peter was released and sent to the American Colonies, a choice given some prisoners. He is listed in the book, Emigrants in Bondage by Marion and Jack Kamiknow, page 188: "Peter Coffey from Newgate to Virginia in Ship Forward Galley, received on board October 28, 1730."Peter Coffey was listed as an early settler of Prince Edward County, Virginia in the Virginia Magazine, V. 22, pg. 95. "Peter Coffey, 220 acres, Vaughns Creek, Sept 20, 1748; 192 acres on Vaughns Creek, Sept. 20, 1748."
He died after 1763 in Prince Edward County. His son, Peter Coffey Jr., was born 1750 in Prince Edward County, Virginia and married Sarah Smith in 1774. He enlisted in the regiment of Colonel James Wood as a volunteer on February 28, 1778. For his service was given a headright grant in Greene County, Georgia of 550 acres of land. His LWT dated Oct 18, 1803, probated Feb 6, 1804 in Hancock County, Georgia.
