John Brown

" John Brown was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1736. He led the party that dared to resist the crown task masters and destroyed the British sloop of war Gasper in Narraganset Bay in 1772. That was the second kick the Rhode Islanders gave the revolutionary ball. He was an enterprising merchant; and, at one time, a member of Congress, and a friend to education and public improvements, a good citizen and worthy man. He died at Providence, Rhode Island in 1803."
