About Revolutionary War Pensions by Jeannette Holland Austin
Revolutionary War Pensions contain a ton of historical and personal
information. There are several things to keep in mind. Most service was
in 3-month stretches. This is because people signed up for three months,
then went home and tended their crops. Also, planters sometimes sent a
slave or paid for a replacement. Although this practice was not
wide-spread, sooner or later the British threatened, and the necessity
arose to protect family. The affidavits of friends, relatives and
neighbors provide personal tid bits you would not otherwise see. It all
comes together in describing the times and lifestyles. You get real
history. All of you have seen the "R" applications (example pension
#R1597). That means that the application was refjected. Usually, the
soldier did not enlist in the Continental Army but was probably a member
of a local militia which performed spasmotic guerrilla attacks around
occupied cities, such as Charleston and Savannah. The "R" applications
doubtless represent the unsung hero, the true adventurer. Pensions were
not allotted without proving at least one years' service. So the various
terms were tallied up in the applications...when, where, commanders,
etc. That is why there is more detail in Revolutionary War Pensions than
Civil War.

GRAVES. I am researching early Georgia to discover more about the Graves
family. My gg grandfather was George Graves who married Lulender Gunn in
1840 in Warren County, Georgia. I can't find George's parents. There was
a Thomas Graves Sr b 1729 Lower Potomack Hundred, Maryland. He and sons
are listed on the 1790 Franklin County Census. I can't connect any of
them to George Graves yet. One thing I know, is that Dr. George Graves
who married Mary Scott June 26 1790 in Augusta, Georgia is not the
father of my George Graves. My George Graves and wife moved west through
Alabama, Mississippi, and settled in Wood County, Texas 1854-1858, where
they are listed on the 1860 census. I am aware of a Graves family in
Muscogee County Georgia and wonder if they are related to my George
Graves? Eddie Graves, Wichita Falls, Texas. egraves at sw.rr.com

IRENE LINDSAY
PEACOCK. From: S A STANCLIFF/ Date: 5/17/2009. I've been trying to
desperately find the gravesite of John Peacock (married to Nancy
Peyton), both from Maryland. Here's what I know: --first they lived in
Oglethorpe Co.; he died in Jasper Co., GA; his birth/death dates:
1745-1826; There are a lot of Jasper Co. deed documents I've found on
line between he and his sons, etc. I assume he's buried on his
land...which is hard to pinpoint. He had sons Lewis, Daniel and
William...just to name a few of his children. His son Lewis married Avey
Hill, daughter of Mordecai Hill. I've visited the county library in
Monticello, GA but still can't find where he's buried. Thanks for
anything you can supply. Susan Stancliff. Email:

GEORGIA PENSION ROLL OF 1835
JACOB CLARK
CAMDEN COUNTY
PRIVATE
NORTH CAROLINA CONT'L LINE
$96.00 ANNUAL ALLOWANCE
$636.70 AMOUNT RECEIVED
SEPTEMBER 7, 1826 PENSION STARTED
AGE 87
Jacob Clark enlisted at Wilmington, North Carolina in the early part of
1777, and served until the end of the war. The First North Carolina
Regiment was originally commanded by Capt. John Walker and later by
Capt. Brown. He saw action in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown, and
other engagements. Jacob Clark was ill during the conflicts at Monmouth
and Valley Forge, but continued to serve in the same unit, until his
capture at Charlestown, South Carolina. He was captured, by the British,
at this important southern port, and held prisoner at St. Augustine,
Florida, until after the Treaty of 1783 was signed. After his release,
from the British prison, he traveled north, to Camden County, Georgia,
where he fell ill. He, most likely, married in Camden County, since his
Widow's pension application states, they were married in 1783; the same
year he was released from prison. In 1783, after Jacob was released from
prison, he was probably destitute and without funds. He was about 400
miles from where he enlisted, six years earlier. On his trip, he crossed
the St. Mary's River at King's Ferry. It is belived he traveled on the
Bartram Trail; one of the oldest trails on the coast. On April 6, 1789,
Jacob applied for a Headright Grant, of land in Camden County. He was
later awarded that grant, which consisted of 200 acres. Early records
indicate, at one point, he lived on a plantation at Canty's or Corley's
Creek, on the north side of the Great Satilla River. In 1809, he paid
taxes on land located in the northwest section of Camden County near a
place now called Clark's Ridge. This place is between Incachee and the
Satilla River. In 1809, Daniel Blue purchased 200 acres, from Jacob , on
Canty's Creek, on the noth side, of the Satilla River. (Deed Book H
45-46 Camden County) On December 2, 1788, the first countywide election
was held at St. Patrick, in Camden County. Fifty-eight votes were cast.
Jacob Clark was among them. Jacob was also a carpenter that specialized
in cabinet making. He also made canoes, boots, shoes, saddles, leather
goods, and did blacksmith work, as well. In August, 1826, a pension
application was executed in Camden County, by Jacob, and granted in
September. He was given a pension of $8 per month. Later on October 16,
1838, his widow made a declaration, for a widow's pension., before Hugh
Brown, Justice of Inferior Court. She stated, she was a resident of
Camden County, married to Jacob Clark, in 1783. She was 68 or 69 years
old. She also stated that Jacob died May 6, 1837. The location of his
grave is unknown, as well as Sarah's, however we do know that records
indicate she died in Columbia County, Florida. A letter, from Leland H.
Dame, M.D., found in the Department of Archives, State of Georgia,
places Jacob's death and burial in Hernando County, Florida, at Thompson
Cemetery. He also lived in Columbia and Marion Counties, Florida. He was
the contractor and builder, of Florida Senator David Yulee's "Old Sugar
Mill", near Homosassa, Citrus County, Florida. Jacob had lived in
Columbia and Marion Counties, FL. Ref: Leland H. Dame, M.D.
