The Kennesaw Gazette published in Atlanta on July 15 1889. Mr. M. G. Whitlock, proprietor of the Whitlock House, Marietta, Ga., which burned to the ground some time ago, and at present proprietor of the Elmwood House in that city, has architects at work on the plans for a one-hundred room hotel to be erected as soon as possible. The grounds for the new hotel have been bought already by Joseph M. Brown, traffic manager of the Western & Atlantic Railroad, a very wealthy and enterprising young man of Atlanta. The grounds are a very beautiful grove of oak trees containing ten acres and handsomely situated, at a comfortable and convenient distance from the W. & A. R. R. depot....Mr. Maxwell, of the Palace, who has just built a handsome home in Marietta, thinks such a hotel as Whitlock contemplates building will pay from the day it is opened, and make money for its owners every day in the year....
Old Margaret Mitchell Home at 195 Peachtree Street in Atlanta. This home was sold by her brother after her death. She was the famous Atlanta author of “Gone With the Wind” who seemed to have fashioned her book somewhat after her Fitzgerald ancestors of Jonesboro (their home is on Mundy's Mill Road, in a state of disrepair). The movie was viewed in 1936 at the Loew's Grand Theatre (formerly DeGive's Grand Opera House) and all of the players, including Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh were present.
Laurance DeGive was born 1828 in Belguim. He and his wife, Pauline and their oldest daughter, Pauline (born 1864), came to America and settled in Georgia after the War Between the States, about 1866. Their first son, Peter, was born 1867, Henry was born 1869 and Julius was born 1871, all in Atlanta. Laurence first built an opera house on Marietta Street and ultimately amassed a fortune. An article in The Atlanta Journal in 1893 referred to him as a gentleman of strong and commendable parts, and of high intelligence and culture. In 1893, he built a new opera house on Peachtree Street, called DeGive's Grand Opera House and furnished it from the retail business of M. Rich and Bros. (later became Rich's Department Store). All of the entrances were heavily draped with gold valour velvet curtains. Royal Wilton carpets trimmed with maroon ground and gold figures were laid in the entraces' the lobby had inlaid marble; and decorate tile graced the spacious vestibule. There were 22 boxes. The first performance given that year was Men and Women. In 1893, Atlanta had 250,000 inhabitants. The opera house was later sold to the Loews Company, who used it for a movie theatre "Loew's Grand Theatre" which became famous for its showing of Gone With The Wind.
The Story of the Nancy Hanks by Jeannette Holland Austin....The Nancy Hanks was a passenger train of the Central of Georgia Railroad whose route was between Savannah and Atlanta and weighed 187,100 pounds. The comfortable coach with grill service was named after a race horse (which had been named for Abraham Lincoln's mother). In 1893 it advertised that you could have dinner on the coach. Its first trip was on Jul 17 1947 and the last one was April 30 1971 when the terminal railway station in Atlanta was demolished. I personally remember the terminal station because my grandmother caught a train from her home in Dallas, Georgia to go shopping in Atlanta. It was a huge structure of cement and marble, certainly on a grand scale.
Robert Reid, aged 34 years of age (1893), resident of Atlanta. John Ramsey worked first for the Pennsylvania Railroad 1888-1889.

DeKalb County Probate Records by Jeannette Holland Austin have been extracted, Wills and Estates 1841-1919 and added to the website Georgia Pioneers. The project was excrutiatingly long and included every estate in those will books.
DeKalb County was created in 1822 after the Muskogee (Creeks) Indians ceded the lands by treaty and was taken from Henry, Gwinnett and Fayette Counties. It was named for Baron Johann DeKalb, a German hero of the American Revolution. In 1853 Fulton County was created from the northern portion of DeKalb County. Many of the settlers to DeKalb County were in search of new lands and were farmers. When researching DeKalb County, Henry (the parent County) and Fulton Counties should also be researched.

Oglethorpe Brings Lutherans to Ebenezer....by Jeannette Holland Austin. The first settlement after Savannah was Ebenezer, a village founded by Saltzburgers who came to America to escape persecution by the Catholic Church. Mr. Van Zant from Switzerland was the founder of the first site of the village which proved to be unsuitable; the site later removed further north. Effingham County was created in 1777 from the parishes of St. Matthew and St. Philip which were established in 1758. Effingham County was named after Lord Effingham who resigned his position of Colonel. in the British Army to serve in America. Earliest Settlers: David Ambrose, Henry Cook, Samuel Dasher, William Downs, Emanuel Dugger, John W. Exley, Micajah Futrell,John K. Hancock County Court House
County Records are Still the Prime Resource by Jeannette Holland Austin...Family researchers, nothing has changed. We still need to search the county records where our ancestors resided. More information will be gleaned here than anywhere else. Think about your own current life-style. When you purchase a home, a deed is recorded in the county where the house is located. The purchasers and sellers current county of residence is noted at the top of the legal description...something like this....John Smith of Fulton County, Georgia. That gives you where that person formerly resided and another place to research. The details of the legal description provide the location. County tax maps provide details such as district numbers and land lots. You can zero in on the location that way. Then use a county map to search for old cemeteries in the area. When you get married, that record is also filed at the local court house. Wills, guardianships, administrators, etc. provide a great deal of information. Even if a person dies intestate (without a will) there are all sorts of documents available, such as receipts, vouchers (of distributees), names of heirs in the annual returns, inventories, etc. This is why we peruse all of the estate indexes in the probate office. Minutes of the Inferior Court also list wills and estates which have been presented for probate. I have provided a number of Georgia county indexes to estate records on the website Georgia Pioneers to help you as well as digital images of county wills and estates. Click on Counties (right of screen) to see index of Testators Names in the wills

Colonials in St. Paul's Parish (Richmond County) by Jeannette Holland Austin...
Settlers to Augusta, Georgia dates back to colonial days when the Indians and white men erected trading posts throughout the district and established a flourishing trade throughout South Carolina and Georgia. Augusta was named after the Princess of Wales and is the second oldest city in Georgia and was the capitol from 1785 to 1795. Governor John Milledge (1757-1818) was governor from 1802 to 1806 and died there. Another prominent figure was General John Twiggs. By the time of the American Revolution, St. Paul's Parish was well entrenched with settlements such as the Quakers in Wrightsboro (now Thomson) who'd been enticed with land grants. After the war, veterans from North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia were granted large tracts of land. In 1777 the region became Richmond County and was named after the Duke of Richmond, a British defender of the colonists. When tracing Richmond County, don't forget to also search the records of Warren and Columbia Counties. Some Wrightsboro's first records fell into Columbia County (now McDuffie).

About the Schooner, The Wanderer by Jeannette Holland Austin. The Wanderer was first designed as a luxury racing yacht and was considered as one of the most extravagent vessels of the New York Yacht Club. The schooner Wanderer arrived in New York on June 26, 1858 where it was purchased by William Corrie and outfitted for a slave voyage to Africa. According to the South Carolina Customs Records, the vessel first sailed to Charleston, South Carolina, leaving there on
July 4th to sail for Trinidad. In November of the same year 407 Africans arrived on Jekyll Island and were put on a wagon train for
the State of Alabama. (US Department of Justice, Microfilm T969, Letters sent by the Attorney General 1851-1871). Two letters were
found in this packet relating to the Wanderer and William Corrie. The attorney general directed that the case be moved to Savannah. One June 1, 1861, the vessel was seized in Key West, Florida by the US Navy. After that, the Union army used the schooner for a gunboat during the War Between the States. There are a number of references regarding
this vessel at the National Archives. Another source of information is the book The Wanderer: The Last American Slave Ship and the Conspiracy That Set Its Sails by Erik Calonius.
Finding all the Heirs by Jeannette Holland Austin....Why all of the heirs are not always listed in ills...Everyone gets really frustrated with some of these last wills and testaments because they do not always list all of the heirs. This is because portions were given earlier and the place to look for that is in the deed records. They are called Deeds of Gift and the language usually reads “ For Love and Affection....” or it could read for $1. It is understandable that one who has lived to an old age might parcel off his property, such as slaves and land, many years before his actual death. All that is left at time is to give the wife the homeplace for her lifetime, then to a son or daughter. Another reason why all children are not named is the children either died prematurely or moved off into another state and not kept in touch. The latter tends to so often be the situation because as the old family seat breaks up, the children disperse into other areas looking for better land. They obtain land grants and draw in lotteries so this is how we chase them down. The daughters' portions went to their husbands, so any names in the will or estate papers are suspect. I usually cross-check these names in marriage records.

Jamestown : 1607 by Jeannette Holland Austin....
If you have not visited Jamestown, Virginia, you are missing a treat as the reconstructed village there provides a great visual of life on the frontier. The original inhabitants consisted of 108 English settlers who sailed at the instruction of a group of London entrepreneurs called the Virginia Company which received a charter from King James I. The purpose was to establish an English settlement in the Chesapeake Bay area. The colonists were supposed to make a colony and find gold as well as a water route to the Orient. However, they faced major trials such as malarial swamps and aggressive tribes of Algonquian natives. The first year it was too late to plant crops so struggled with starvation and disease as well as attacks from the Indians. It was Captain John Smith who held the colony together during tough times. Over the next several years supply years from England brought foodstuffs and supplies as well as new settlers. In 1622, the natives made war on the entire Virginia peninsula and performed a massacre of the Berkeley plantation settlement. Many soldiers from Jamestown participated in this fight. The Jamestown settlers appointed its own representatives to the House of Burgesses, sending them periodically to London, as the records will show in the Virginia Company. It was years after the Jamestown settlement of 1607 that the Virginia Company established an equal, uniform government to make laws for the colony's settlers. James City County was formed in 1634 as one of the original eight shires of Virginia and Jamestown served as the capitol of the Colony for 83 years. Many of the early records did not survive, however, some deeds are found in James City County as well as Henrico County.
The American Pioneer Series, an encyclopedic database of more than one million names is being added to Pioneer Families
This work is the personal collection of Jeannette Holland Austin, Georgia author of over 100 genealogy books, and was used as personal source of information for almost fifty years. Most persons were not published elsewhere and the tool is of momentous value to researchers, particularly those having ancestors in the original thirteen colonies. The entries are encyclopedic and consist of referenced materials from census, marriages, passenger lists, bibles, military, cemeteries, obituaries, quotations from quarterlies, magazines, books, newspapers and so on. It is a marvelously unique collection of family histories and notes which do not appear elsewhere; some photographs. The American Pioneer Series is now available over the internet for the first time and is recommended as a tool for individuals and libraries. The undertaking to prepare the material for internet viewers was labor-intensive and costly. The final result is published in 26 volumes. Because of its enormous size, Ms. Austin decided not to publish the volumes into books but as agreed to make it available to subscribers of Pioneer Families LLC.com. United States and International copyright laws apply; but subscribers have all rights pertaining to using it for their personal needs, as well as making copies.

British Prison Ships by Jeannette Holland Austin. More than 11,500 Americans were held captive on British prison ships. They died of disease, starvation, violence and neglect. A monument to these soldiers was erected in Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn, New York; it overlooks Wallabout Bay, the site where these prisoners were held captive in sixteen British prison ships between the years of 1776 and 1783. In 1776 Fort Putnam under the command of Colonel Rufus Putnam stood in this site in the park; it was built to defend the Brooklyn high land and to protect New York from the british. It was Georgia's Major General Nathaniel Greene who battled the british there on August 27, 1776. He was greatly outnumbered and the British took control of New York City and Long Island, occupying them until the war ended. The ships collected American prisoners from everywhere and included the seamen imprisoned in Charleston, South Carolina after the British occupation of 1780, St. Augustine, Florida and Halifax, Nova Scotia. Over 5,000 prisoners came from Savannah, Georgia. Eventually such prisoners were eventually transferred to the prison ships in the New York harbor. Every morning, British guards yelled ” Turn out your dead!” and the bodies were taken and buried in shallow graves along the shore. A British ship Jersey was nicknamed Hell by its prisoners because of crowding conditions, sickness, starvation, whippings and frequent deaths. General George Washington complained about the prison ships in his letter to British commander General William Howe on January 13, 1777. Prisoners were released if they renounced the Revolutionary cause and pledged their loyalties to King George III. When the war ended in 1783, the remaining prisoners were freed. The list of of prisoners was copied from records in the British War Department in 1888 by the Society of Old Brooklynites.
Georgia's Ceded Lands by Jeannette Holland Austin....
The ceded lands of St. Paul's Parish was a land succession in colonial northwest Georgia in 1773. Today this land is known as Wilkes County which was created from the state constitution in 1777. But Indians were still in the area and settlers lived inside forts during dangerous times. On July 22, 1777, Tom Dooly and twenty-one men in two companies set out to recover some horses which had been stolen from their post by Creek war parties led by Emistisiguo. When they reached skull Shoals on the Oconee River, they were ambushed. Dooly was wounded in his hill and fell to the ground unable to move cried out to his fleeing comrades not to leave him to be slaughtered by the Indians. But they did. The Cherokee Indians were the chief original inhabitants of the territory which was afterwards formed into Wilkes County, but Creeks also lived there. This is the treaty which was in force in 1773/ The local tradition is that white settlers first resided in this territory as early as 1769; this fact was also verified by General Robert Toombs. The treaty made in Augusta in 1763 was made with the colonial governs of Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina and hosted seven hundred Indians, chiefs of the Cherokees, Creeks, Choctaws, Chickasaws and Cabarobas. This treaty fixed the northern boundary of the white settlements in Georgia. The line runs up the Savannah River to the mouth of Little River and then to the mouth of Williams Creek (now Taliaferro County). By 1773 the Indians were deeply indebted to the traders and could not pay. That was when another treaty was made in Augusta beween Governor Wright and the Indians which opened up Wilkes County for settlement and the new northern boundary ran from the northern part of Wilkes County (now Elbert) to Cherokee Corner as it was called. This is the territory which was ceded by the Indians to pay their debts. The debt amounted to about sixty thousand pounds sterling. The terms of this last treaty was to sell the land to white settlers and from the process pay off the traders. The land became known as Scotchtown.
Georgia's Last Surviving Confederate Soldier
William Joshua Bush was born July 10, 1845 in Wilkinson County, Georgia on the old Bush Plantation in Wilkinson County. He joined the confederate army in 1861 along with his cousin and became part of Co. B, 14th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Northern Virginia. In October of 1861 he was mustered out of the army in Richmind, Virginia for some sort of injury, but later rejoined in October of 1864 and fought valiantly in the battles of Atlanta, Milledgeville, Cross Keys and Duncan's Old Field. He served with a company which called itself Joe Brown's Pets and remained with the company until it surrendered at Stephen's Station of the Central Railway in 1865. Bush was never a general but was given the honorary title because of the many offices which he held in the Confederate Veterans Association. He attended most of the annual reunions and was last present at Norfolk, Virginia in 1951 and in
, Mississippi in 1952. Five months later the veterns were disbanded. He died on Armistice Day on November 11, 1952 at Fitzgerald, Georgia, aged 107 years and was buried at Evergreen Cemetery.
